Connecting Ecologies in Oxford
Campion Hall has announced that it will host 'Connecting Ecologies' in early December. Inspired by the vision of Pope Francis’ recent encyclical Laudato si, it will be different to the usual academic conference. Fr. James Hanvey SJ, Master of Campion Hall describes it as, “a series of events that bring together specialists from different academic and professional backgrounds. The aim is to stimulate dialogue and reflection about an integrated response to environmental change.” The idea was inspired by Pope Francis' call for the creation of an ‘Integral Ecology’, with an appreciation of the interrelatedness of different spheres of life.
The event will begin with an opening public lecture at Pembroke College on Wednesday 6th December at 4pm given by Professor Kevin Irwin of the Catholic University of America and Andreas Carlgren vice-chair of the Stockholm Environment Institute and former Swedish Minister for the Environment. The main symposium takes the form of a colloquium rather than a conference. Participants include individuals drawn from academic institutions, government, policy organisations and faith communities. Harry Househam, one of the conference organisers explains, "The key questions will relate to how we begin to construct an integral ecology and provide the resources, conceptual, political, social, scientific, theological and spiritual to respond to ecological stress."
There will also be a music recital at Christ Church Cathedral on Thursday 7th December at 1.45pm. This will include a premier of ‘Clothed in white’ by Campion Hall composer-in-residence Fr Christopher Willcock SJ, played by Hamish Dustagheer, Maestro di Cappella at Malta Metropolitan Cathedral, Malta and visiting Music Fellow at Campion Hall. Also reflecting the inspiration behind the event will be ‘Laudato sì, mi Signore cum tutte le Tue creature’ for four voices by Luca Uggias with selected readings from Laudato sSi and the works of Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ and Wendell Berry. Please see the Campion Hall website for more details about these events.
