Glasgow student to face Europe's best young athletes

A former student of St Aloysius College in Glasgow been selected to represent Great Britain in Athletics for the first time at Under 20 level. 17-year-old Emma Canning, who graduated from the College at the end of her 5th year in 2014, is currently studying Law at the University of Strathclyde. She has been selected to represent Great Britain in Combined Events at a number of international events including one in Paris in which she will compete against the best young athletes from all over Europe.

The Old Aloysian was selected for the Great Britain squad on the back of an impressive performance in Sheffield earlier in January at the England Athletics Indoor Combined Events Championships where she earned a Personal Best points total and a Bronze medal for the Combined Events.

As a Combined Events (CE) Athlete, Emma competes in the 800m, 60m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Putt. She says that although she had always hoped to earn herself a GB vest, she didn’t expect it to be so soon. “It’s a special feeling and definitely motivates me to train harder so that it’s not the last time I get to experience it. I feel it will benefit me as a young athlete; gaining this experience as a junior will hopefully stand me in good stead for when I’m chasing senior GB teams in the future.”

Exceptional

Mr Dean Tearny, the Director of Sport at St Aloysius College, described Emma as an “exceptional student and athlete … She always had the drive, enthusiasm and talent to go all the way and we are delighted for her. What an achievement!”

Her coach, Iain McEwan, who takes Emma for six sessions per week, commented: “‘Long jump and hurdles are probably her best events at the moment but she is a good all-rounder which, of course, is what you need in CE.” Mr McEwan says that Emma will be competing in Paris against some of the best young Combined Event athletes in Europe, adding that she deserves it after a lot of hard work.

Emma Canning has a few more big events on the horizon, including the Scottish Senior Championship, the Scottish and British University Championships and the Scottish under 20 Combined Events Championships.
