Jesuit appointed Bishop in India

Pope Francis has appointed Father Francis Serrao SJ as Bishop of Shimoga in India. Father Serrao (pictured) is currently Provincial of the Karnataka Province, from where several Jesuits are serving in Guyana at present.

Fr "Frankie" Serrao joined the Society of Jesus in 1979 and was ordained a priest in 1992. He has ample experience in parish ministry and administration as well as in social action ministries in India.  He has served as Mission Superior in Anekal and as a parish priest. Between 1998 and 2003, Fr Serrao acted as Director of the Regional Theological Centre of the Karnataka Province. He then served a year as Superior of the Bijapur Jesuit Mission before being appointed as the rector of St Aloysius College, Mangalore in 2004. After a five-year stint as the Rector, he was appointed Provincial Superior of Karnataka Jesuit Province in 2009. He has also been teaching Theology to Jesuit students preparing for the priesthood.

Additionally, Father General has appointed Father Jakub Kolacz SJ as Provincial of the Southern Poland Province. Father Kolacz is at present the Socius and Secretary to the Provincial. He was born in 1970, entered the Society of Jesus in 1988 and was ordained a priest in 1999. The Jesuit Polish Catholic Mission is based at St Francis Church, London NW10.
