Celebrating centuries of service

those more than 50 years in the Society

7th September was historically the date Jesuits would take their first vows.  Nowadays the occasion takes place on the first Saturday of September, just ahead of the beginning of the new term so the new Jesuit students can travel to their appointed universities for the first stage of their formation.

But today we celebrate the jubilees of seven Jesuits of and in the British province who took their first vows on this day.

Fr Michael Bossy (Stamford Hill community) and Fr Frank Hull (Preston community), in the Society 70 years

Fr James Christie (Glasgow community) and Fr Peter Willcocks (Edinburgh community), in the Society 60 years

Fr Brendan Callaghan (about to move to the Manchester community), Fr Kevin O’Rourke (Birmingham community) and Fr Patrick Riordan (London Copleston community) who all celebrate 50 years in the Society

At mass in the curia today Fr Provincial Damian Howard said:
“we are deeply grateful for the many years of faithful and generous service given by our brothers.”

The photograph was taken at this year’s first vows celebration and includes all Jesuits present who have been 50 years or longer in the Society.
