Prayers and support for Syria
The 7th April 2018 marks the 4th anniversary of the martyrdom of Fr Frans van der Lugt SJ, assassinated outside the Jesuit Community house in Homs. Together with Aid to the Church in Need, the Jesuits in Britain are praying a Novena for Syria - based at Farm Street Church and available online -, to remember Fr Frans and all the victims in the Middle East.
The focus will once again be for the immediate release of Fr Paolo dall’Oglio SJ, who was kidnapped on 29th July 2013, and, as of today, nothing of substance has been heard of him. Fr Paolo re-founded the Deir Mar Musa, a sixth-century monastery 50 miles north of Damascus, which over 30 years he developed into a centre for interfaith dialogue. In 2014 he was awarded (in absentia) the Nobel Missionary Prize by the Missionary Association, Cuore Amico Fraternità, for his "great witness and strong commitment to interreligious dialogue".
Fr Dominic Robinson SJ will run the Virgin Sport Westminster – British 10K Run 2018 for Aid to the Church in Need, in support of persecuted Christians in Syria and Iraq, together with Sebastian Cichocki and John Pontifex. The event will take place on Sunday 15th July.
ACN staff, friends and family have taken part in the run for a numbers of years, to aid Christian families who are returning home to Iraq and want to continue to raise funds for their persecuted brothers and sisters in Syria.
“It’s now four years since the martyrdom of Fr Frans, says Fr Dominic, and there is still no news of Fr Paolo.”
“The tragic situation in Syria goes from bad to worse and the need for both prayer and action is greater than ever. So, we invite you to join in this novena to raise prayers and awareness of the tragedy in Syria.”
