Martina and Colette's Countdown to Christmas
As Advent begins and the preparations draw closer for festive feasts, Martina Maher and Colette Scully talk to RTE Radio 1’s The Leap of Faith about this year’s cookery book, Saintly Feasts, Food for Saints and Scholars, which links every recipe with a saint. The pair also look ahead to their forthcoming book on scones which comes out at the end of February.

Martina and Colette are two Irish ladies living in Birmingham who have been cooking Sunday lunch for the Jesuits for 22 years. One among them, Fr Dries van den Akker SJ, who has a special interest in saints and their stories, often matched some element of the meal with a canonised figure from history. When the ladies (now aged 91 and 72 respectively) decided to hang up their aprons, the concept of a complete book of recipes and associated saints came about.
Saintly Feasts: Food for Saints and Scholars by Martina Maher and Colette Scully, with Dries van den Akker SJ, is published in Ireland and the UK by Messenger Publications. Priced at €19.95/£17.50
All profits from the book go to the Jesuit Refugee Service UK.
