This experience profoundly shaped him and the spiritual practices he later developed, known as The Spiritual Exercises. It was in Manresa where Ignatius moved from a relatively superficial understanding of faith to a deep, mystical understanding of God. The insights he gained at Manresa emphasized discernment, finding God in all things, and striving for “the greater glory of God” (ad maiorem Dei gloriam), which are the foundational principles of Ignatian spirituality.
The Tourist Office of Manresa will be at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, taking place from November 5th to 7th at Excel London. The team are proud to represent the Basque region and the city of Manresa, highlighting their unique position as the final destination of the Ignatian Way, a spiritual pilgrimage (Camino Ignaciano) which retraces the journey of St Ignatius of Loyola from his hometown in the Basque Country to Manresa. Parishioners from Jesuit-run churches, including the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mayfair, where we are based, have completed the Camino Ignacio, as well as many Jesuits from around the world.
During the event, the team at the Tourist Office are aiming to showcase the rich culture, heritage, gastronomy, and stunning landscapes of the Basque Country where Ignatius grew up and came of spiritual age. Tickets are available here.
We are also delighted to share a public access film about the Ignatian Way that describes the Way in its many facets. This has been coordinated by the Pilgrim Office of the Ignatian Way in Spain. The film is in the original Spanish, and subtitled in Portuguese, Italian, English, French and German. We hope this film will be of interest to pilgrims, past and present, and those with an interest in St Ignatius and his legacy.
