New briefing from Jesuit Refugee Service UK and partners calls for reform to support stateless people

January 21, 2025

This week Jesuit Refugee Service UK (JRS UK), in collaboration with Asylum Aid, The University of Liverpool Law Clinic, the European Network on Statelessness and JustRight Scotland, has published a new briefing on statelessness in the UK, which sets out a call for reform.

According to the briefing, stateless individuals live in a legal limbo that excludes them from social, economic, and civic life. This lack of recognition often leads to barriers in accessing essential services, and legal advice, leaving many vulnerable to exploitation and destitution.

Stateless people are not recognised as nationals by any State under its laws. Most are migrants, often forcibly displaced, and some are children born in the UK to non-British parents.

The authors of the briefing expose the hidden injuries of the stateless and propose clear steps for reform which are vital to ensure that those affected can access the protections they need to move forward with their lives.

For further information, including the full briefing and a template letter which you can use to write to your MP about this issue, visit the JRS UK website here.
