St Anselm’s Catholic Church upgrades to sustainable heating to better serve the Southall community

February 26, 2025

St Anselm’s Catholic Church in Southall has taken a significant step forward in supporting the local community with the installation of two new energy-efficient boilers.

The much-needed upgrade replaces outdated systems that were decommissioned in early 2024 due to carbon monoxide emissions, which had left the church and its community outreach programs without reliable heating or hot water.

Fr Jovito blesses the new boilers at St Anselm's in Southall

Fr Jovito D'Souza SJ, parish priest at Southall, led a special blessing of the new boilers. This act not only celebrated the practical benefits of the upgrade but also marked a renewed commitment to serving the community. The church now stands better equipped to support thousands each week, including the homeless, food bank users, and the wider congregation.

"The new boilers are a blessing for the community and the environment", said Fr Jovito. "They provide essential warmth for worshippers and those in need, while also reducing our carbon footprint by an estimated 30%."

The £64,629 project was made possible through a combination of grant funding and community fundraising. St Anselm’s received generous support from Benefact Trust (£3,750) and National Lottery Awards for All (£20,000), alongside donations and events organised by parishioners, such as a fundraising dance by the Goan Community Association and a Konkani drama performance, ‘Bank of Love,’ led by Mr. Simon Gonsalves.

The impact of this project extends far beyond the church walls. Each week, over 60 homeless individuals rely on St Anselm’s for food, washing facilities, and support for overcoming addiction. The food bank, which serves around 200 people, has become a vital resource amid the cost-of-living crisis. A recent survey among parishioners revealed unanimous local support for these initiatives, with 100% of respondents emphasising the church’s role in fostering community cohesion and improving energy efficiency.

St Anselm’s Catholic Church in Southall, which holds five Masses every Sunday and welcomes around 2,000 worshippers, has long been a hub for both religious and social outreach. Its interfaith connections with Hindu and Sikh communities further highlight its commitment to unity and service in Southall, an area ranked among the more deprived in England.

With the new heating system now fully operational, St Anselm’s is well‑positioned to carry on its mission of providing a warm and welcoming space for all while supporting sustainability and community wellbeing.
