The Jesuits in Britain follow the policy of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, and requires that all allegations of abuse are referred immediately to the Police and Social Services Departments who are responsible for investigating those allegations. This ensures that all information available is shared with those with the legal responsibility to investigate and also ensures that there can be no possible suspicion of a cover-up by the Church.

Following this investigation, which follows UK law, the Church conducts its own internal investigation, following Canon law. In cases where the Statutory Authorities decide that they will not, or cannot investigate, but concerns remain about the safety of children and young people, enquiries will be made by those with responsibility for safeguarding within the Church.

Victims come first. This has not always been the case. With the whole Church the Jesuits in Britain deeply regret all instances of sexual abuse and the abuse of minors and vulnerable adults, and accept that grave mistakes were made in the past.

The safety and welfare of the vulnerable is the first consideration. Where allegations of abuse are made, the Church has to consider the removal of the person accused from any role that brings them into contact with the vulnerable, while investigations or enquiries are ongoing.
