'Hope does not disappoint', a Christmas message from Fr General and the Society of Jesus

December 20, 2024

Fr Arturo Sosa SJ is the global leader of the Jesuits, the largest religious order of priests and brothers in the Catholic Church. He was elected to this role by fellow Jesuits in 2016 at the General Congregation.

Fr. Sosa was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on November 12, 1948. Raised in a Catholic family that valued academics, he entered the Society of Jesus in September 1966 and was ordained a priest in 1977.

In this special Christmas message, Fr Sosa begins by telling us that, “The birth of the poor and humble Jesus was a decisive, silent revolution that engendered a fundamental transformation of humanity”.

He goes on to say: "Christmas is the joyful fulfilment of God's promise of salvation, in which we dare to hope. As we experience in the Contemplation of the Incarnation in the Spiritual Exercises, the loving gaze of the Trinity reveals a world of extreme inequalities and polarization: good and evil, love and hate, rich and poor, peace and war, life and death. In this context, not very different from ours today, Jesus took our condition, our human condition, at the appointed time and pitched his tent among us."
